The Toyota Prius - the Industry's First Mass-Produced Hybrid Vehicle
The Toyota Prius holds a special place in automotive history as the first of its kind: a hybrid vehicle with a combination gasoline and electric powertrain.

Initially launched in Japan, with a few changes the Prius was adapted for the American market.
With the launch of the first generation of this car in 1997, the industry had its first mass-produced hybrid car and consumers had new choices for fuel efficiency and consumption. In fact, this car was such an industry leader that even its name was meant to reflect that status. The name "Prius" is derived from Latin, meaning "to go before."
Initially only sold in Japan, the Toyota Prius first reached American markets in 2000. Several modifications needed to be made to the model in order to be more applicable to our market.
For example, while the low fuel consumption was an attractive feature, American drivers required more power to cover the kind of driving done in a significantly larger country. However, with those few key changes, the Toyota Prius began to catch many eyes with the offer of ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) designation and the $2000 tax rebate for fuel efficiency.
With each new generation, the Prius's fuel efficiency has risen to remain at or near the top of the industry.
Over the years, the Toyota Prius has gone through four generations. Of course, the most notable modification made from generation to generation is the impressive ongoing perfection of fuel efficiency:
- The first generation boasted a fuel economy of 42 mpg in the city.
- With the second generation, that figure jumped up to 48 mpg.
- However, the third generation managed to beat that figure with an increase to 51 mpg.
- With the current generation of Toyota Prius, drivers can enjoy an impressive 54 mpg in the city.
It is little wonder that Prius has earned the designation of top-selling hybrid car in the world.
Not just an industry leader, the Prius has become a cultural and even political icon.
Of course, the Toyota Prius doesn't simply lead in the automotive industry. Over the course of its history, the Prius has increasingly become a symbol in culture and political expression.
The prevalence of the Toyota Prius as the car of choice among conscientious celebrities and organizations has made the car into the symbol for many movements. The Toyota Prius has been connected to conversations and causes ranging from climate change to reducing US involvement in foreign affairs and international oil dependence.
However, whether you are driving your Toyota Prius for the innovative design or the sociopolitical statement, you can be sure that you will enjoy the wide range of benefits which have come to be the hallmark of the Toyota name.
