History of the Ford Edge

One of Ford's newest vehicles, the Edge was designed for modern uses and lifestyles and has seen great success from its beginning.

2015 Ford Edge Sport in copper

Although the name "Ford" goes back so far into automotive history that it is nearly synonymous with the word "car", the Ford Edge is an incredibly new addition. This midsize crossover SUV debuted in 2007 and, despite its relative youth, is already living up to its "edgy" designation.

The first generation Edge targeted the new midsize crossover SUV market segment, with multiple drivetrain options and trim levels aimed at different buyer groups.

In the comparatively short time that the Ford Edge has been on the market, it has already entered its second generation. The first generation, running from its debut in 2007 up until 2014, represented Ford's entry into the popular new midsize crossover SUV segment. The model was targeted at families and, as such, was available with a variety of practical options.

Consumers could select the Ford Edge with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. They could choose between three distinct Powertrain options and four separate trim levels. This first generation appealed to families with a powerful combination of high fuel economy, a smooth driving experience, and comfortable, family-friendly cabin.

The Edge has been a platform for some unique innovations and new technologies that were later added to other vehicles in the Ford lineup.

The MyFord interface system allowed easy integration of digital devices with the vehicle's main system.

Of course, the Ford Edge wanted to live up to that "edgy" promise and, as such, the model offered a few unique innovations. Of note, this vehicle was one of the first to offer unique technology such as the MyFord interface system, which was meant to integrate any handheld digital device into the vehicle's main system.

For its second generation, the Edge got a little more "edgy" but kept the same strong selling points that made the first generation a success.

Naturally, keeping up with an "edgy" profile means constant innovation and so, in 2015, the Ford Edge entered its second generation. While some vehicles progress through their generations with relatively minor alterations, the Ford Edge took this opportunity for a complete redesign.

Shifting from the Ford CD3 platform to the CD4, the model took on a tougher and more masculine look. With a vehicle this keen on innovation, we can look forward to an interesting future ahead for the Ford Edge. However, whatever changes lie ahead, we can predict that it will continue to offer the same smooth ride and comfortable, family-friendly cabin as always.
