The Toyota Highlander - a Pioneer in Car-Based Crossover SUVs
When it was introduced in early 2000, the Toyota Highlander was among the first car-based, mid-sized SUVs. Most SUVs up to that point were based on trucks, but the new crossover SUVs quickly supplanted the traditional ones in customer appeal and sales figures.
The Toyota Highlander is comparatively new to the SUV market and has only gone through three generations. The Highlander's frame was based on the same platform shared by the Lexus RX 300.
The First Generation
Initially, the model offered two trim styles - the base model and the Limited model. A third trim, the Sport model, was introduced toward the end of the first generation's production.
The original model offered two rows of seating for up to five passengers. However, Toyota quickly offered an option to include a third-row seat. With this configuration, drivers could accommodate seven passengers and yet still enjoy the feel of a car.
The Toyota Highlander was appealing to consumers because it was a leader in creating a new class of vehicle:
- On the one hand, the smaller car-based frame allowed the Highlander to have a car-like driving feel.
- On the other hand, the frame created a much greater functionality for the everday user with more interior room and easier access than traditional truck-based SUVs.
The Second Generation
By 2008, the Toyota Highlander had graduated to its second generation. This generation featured a wide range of modifications and safety upgrades, but continued the successful recipe introduced by the first generation.
The Third Generation
The third generation of the Highlander was introduced in 2013. This new generation has a gentler and more rounded appearance, further distancing it from traditional, truck-based SUVs. This version of the Highlander is larger, with added length and width to enjoy, as well as the ability to seat eight passengers.
Staying true to its original recipe, the Highlander is now more successful than ever.
The new generation has proven to be exceedingly popular and in 2016 the model saw a record sales year. It also holds an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus designation, making the Toyota Highlander one of the safest crossovers on the market.
