Ford Mustang - an Instant Classic that's Only Grown Stronger after Returning to its Roots
After one of the most successful production launches in automotive history, the Mustang lost its way in the 1980s and 1990s, only to return with a vengeance!
The first Ford Mustang debuted in March of 1964 in Dearborn, Michigan, and it made its first widespread public appearance in April of the same year at the World's Fair in New York. This appearance on three American television networks was seen all over the United States.
History credits the Ford Mustang with creating what is known as the "pony car" category of American muscle cars. This class of car is known for its sporty look with long hoods and short rears.
Massive Early Success Partially Caused by a Successful Role in a James Bond Movie
The Ford Mustang owns the title of one of the most successful product launches in automotive history. One of the primary reasons for this was its appearance in the James Bond movie Goldfinger in September. This appearance touched off a sales explosion, and the Ford Mustang went on to sell a massive one million plus vehicles in the first eighteen months after it was first made available to the public.
A return to its classic shape in the early 2000s propelled the Mustang back to mainstream commercial success.
The Mustang is currently in its sixth generation and it has undergone many transformations through the years, both to update its performance and capabilities and to keep up with changing regulations. After completely leaving behind its original famous silhouette by the 1980s and 1990s, the Mustang returned to a more vintage shape for its fifth generation released in 2005. With this return to its classic shape came improved sales and a return to its original position as the most popular pony car.
Not just an American classic, the Mustang is now sold in all kinds of different markets around the world.
Today the Mustang is sold around the world, with many different options and configurations to adapt it to all of its target markets. Markets with high tariffs on imported cars get special engines to help make the car as affordable as possible, while right-hand drive markets like the UK get Mustangs with steering wheels on the right hand side.
Today's powerful Shelby GT 350R pays homage to the Mustang's long and successful racing history.
Racing has been part of the Mustang's appeal from the beginning, with the famous Shelby Mustangs of the 1960s helping to establish the Mustang's credibility and fame as a performance platform to racing enthusiasts around the world. Today the Mustang GT 350R pays homage to those famous early racers with massive performance from its naturally-aspirated, high-revving v8, aero and suspension upgrades and radical, optional carbon fiber wheels.
