Learn about the Ford Escape

A unique vehicle, the Escape was initially developed in partnership with Mazda. Both Ford and Mazda versions went on to much success.

While developing the Escape, Ford worked closely with the Japanese automotive manufacturers Mazda to create a compact crossover SUV which would be able to compete on the global market. The resulting cars from each manufacturer differed greatly in terms of specifications and engineering, but both achieved significant successes in their respective domestic zones.

The Ford Escape was launched in the US market in 2000, ahead of a full release for the 2001 model year. In its first full year of production, the Escape achieved over 164,000 sales in the US; a little over half the number of units that Ford was able to sell in 2015. This is a testament to the way in which the Escape has snowballed in popularity in its first decade and a half.

After three successful generations of Escapes, sales continue to grow and it is now a dominant player in the crossover SUV market.

The vehicle is now into its third generation, which is proving to be the most popular iteration to date. Within a year of its release in 2013, the revamped third-gen Escape barely missed out on the 300,000 annual sales mark. The Escape smashed this target the following year, and has remained comfortably above 300k per annum each year since.

Plenty of options for all possible customers means the Escape is well-positioned to continue its wide appeal.

Available in three powertrain versions - both a 2.3 and a 2.5l i4 option are available, as well as a 3.0l V6 option - the Escape has so far shown that it has the versatility to dominate the crossover SUV market. What happens next remains to be seen, but Ford has to be pleased with the Escape's success.
